The production crew details how they created the sword, skull and book from this week's episode.
Jeor Mormont’s Skull
Prop Master Gordon Fitzgerald: "This was one of the most interesting props to work on this season. We drew up ideas of how to break the skull so you could drink from it."
Fitzgerald: "We got a picture of the actor’s jaw and teeth and then remodeled a generic skull to match. It was quite rough and jagged so it should look fairly gruesome on camera."
Weapons Master Tommy Dunne: "It’s a beautiful sword, one of the nicest ones that’s been designed. We created two lion’s heads on the pommel to represent House Lannister. We tried to wrap the tail right around the pommel itself for more opulence."
Dunn: "Ice has a pattern on the blade – a Valyrian look – so we replicated that same pattern on both Joffrey’s and Jamie’s sword."
The Book of Brothers
Fitzgerald: "The books are concepted and designed, the covers in particular. They're then sent off to the book binders to get made. When they come back, the writers, directors and Michael Eaton, our graphic designer, will work out the pages we see."
Fitzgerald: "The pages are all hand-painted. Obviously, given the size of the book, there's only a certain number of pages actually created, but Michael will do those by hand."
