Fans Proclaim Their Faith With GOT Tattoos

Exclusive to this year's Game of Thrones 'Survive the Realm' experience at Comic-Con was the opportunity for fans to get tattoos. The permanent kind.

The complimentary tattoos were courtesy of the team at local shop Left Hand Black. Owner and artist Turk, who is also a fan of the show, helped devise the tattoo designs on offer as well as the sizing and placement restrictions. (Although visions of ravens and Joffrey's crown were dancing in his head, the final 15 designs were selected for practical reasons including efficiency.) Turk reported that coincidentally, he had been seeing an upswing in GOT-tattoo requests, which wasn't a surprise to him. "The imagery is so awesome," he said.

Kenny Smith: "I was going to get one, and thought it was a good opportunity to get a free one."

The very first fan to submit to Turk's chair was Kenny Smith in town from West Virginia. Smith who was planning to get a GOT tattoo some day, thought it was the perfect opportunity to realize that dream. Smith went for one on his ankle, a last minute decision. "I have one on the other ankle, so it balances out," he said.

Lyea Quintana of Northern California arrived at 7:30 a.m. and was third on line. She admitted he was initially skeptical she could -- and should -- get a "real, real tattoo," at Comic-Con, but decided that she loved the show that much, she needed to have one. (Total time pondering: 10-15 minutes.) Quintana's Baratheon stag tattoo would be her fifth, giving her an equal number with her fiancé, another consideration.

Lyea Quintana: "I love the show and books."

Uriah Pavia: "It's a bonding thing."

Uriah Pavia of Santa Cruz, California was on line with his best friend Renny Reyes, also of Santa Cruz. Pavia is to serve as Reyes' best man at his wedding Saturday and the two came prepared to get matching "Valar Dohaeris" tatts. "He's my right hand man," said Reyes, who then admitted that he had not yet apprised his fiancee of this plan. (Reyes did end up giving her a call before getting into Turk's chair.)

And for fans who think forever is too long, temporary tattoos featuring house sigils are also available.

All Men Must Drink, Including Pedro Pascal

Pedro Pascal Valar Morghulis.jpg

Pedro Pascal was on hand for the ceremonial tapping of Ommegang Brewery's latest collaboration with 'Game of Thrones,' Valar Morghulis Dubbel Ale. Pascal poured the first glass and pronounced it "delicious."

Pascal went with a similar turn of phrase when asked to describe what Oberyn Martell would be like as a drink. "Rich, delicious ... and a little dangerous," he offered. "A good poison." Pascal hospitably poured and served Valar Morghulis to the many who flocked around the bar at the Wired Lounge on Thursday afternoon.

As for his ideal GOT drinking buddy, the actor named Tyrion Lannister. "Tyrion and I would have been buddies," Pascal theorized about what could have been. "We would have gotten into a lot of trouble together and a lot of it would have included beer and wine."

The event was also an opportunity for a selection of GOT fans to meet the actor as well as sample the beer, which hits stores in September.
